at a glance | A steep ascent of the stairs built by former slaves takes visitors to the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Penha (Church of Our Lady of Pity), which was built over 100 years ago. A little further along the path is a viewpoint, where participants can take in wonderful panoramic views of the Rio cityscape, including the Cidade do Samba (Samba City) and Vila Olímpica da Gamboa (Olypic Village of Gamboa). Continuing the journey visitors comes across a simple and charming chapel, before reaching the second look-out over the Port Zone of the city, where urban glamour meets majestic mountains. The tour draws to close at the 'reservoir of memories' in which a sound-visual installation projects residents' testimonies, a verbal reconstruction of the social and physical past of Rio's favelas. | introduction | |||
