at a glance

a unique spot in the city to learn an alternative history of marvelous city, museu de favela - muf is the first ever museum that preserves and celebrates the intimate memories and cultural heritage of some of the world's favelas.

organized outside of the state, the museum is a non-governmental organization, which is supported by its strong links to the local community, after being founded by cultural leaders and residents of the pavão, pavãozinho, and cantagalo favelas.

inaugurated in 2008, with a visitation gallery that presented images and stories of some of the older residents of the favelas, the aim of the museum has always been to defend the dignity of the people living within these communities, and to battle social segregation.

it also gives residents a base for their cultural values, whilst providing contact with the community to those from outside.       arrow-back      arrow-forward
