often in partnership with local universities, such as the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro - ufrj and Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro - PUC-Rio,  some of rio's ngo's are actively educating communities' residents and disseminating information and knowledge about favelas' culture, contribution, and potential. 

other initiatives that are actively helping in the development of local organizations are  the programa nacional de segurança pública com cidadania - pronasci (national program of public safety for citizens) a program by the brazilian ministry of justice.

many ngo's benefit from help and donations from large corporate sponsors such as globo network, petrobras, banco santander, banco real, and international institutions such the unicef and unesco.
