part of the guaratiba neighborhood, the region is comprised of fields of mangrove and marshes which extend to the east, while the 'restinga' type of terrain spreads into the west, along the atlantic coast.

most of this area was included in the 'reserva biológica e arquelógica de guaratiba', or 'biological and archeological reserve of guaratiba', created in 1974 with the aim of protecting these unique habitats.

this nature reserve does provide incredible sights, being commonly shown in movies and television due to its beauty.
