at a glance

in the 1960s, bossa nova was the latest revolutionary trend that blended jazz and samba in a unique soothing new sound - however a second front of music was hitting rio and brazil in general, widely known as mpb, an acronym for música popular brasileira, or popular brazilian music in english.

one of its intriguing and distinguishing characteristics is that its fusion and intermingling of genres that emerged before it and alongside it, continuing to develop with the alacrity and openness of the inhabitants and culture that surround it.

although the term mpb can be considered to be born during pre-colonial times, its popularity was not seen till the 20th century - the genre presented itself during a time of political and cultural issues, such as the coup d'état of 1964 and the military dictatorship, causing much of the lyrics and songs to serve as protests to the status the country was facing at the time.  arrow-back       arrow-forward
