at a glance

reggae was developed in jamaica in the late 1960s - the term reggae is actually a particular musical style that came on the heels of ska and rocksteady - like in many other places in the world, the sounds of jamaica started drawing a following in brazil in the late 1960's, along with the advent of bob marley, making it an established genre.

soon, local artist started embracing the genre, such as gilberto gil who recorded the first successful reggae album in brazil including năo chores mais, a cover in portuguese of no woman no cry, selling over 500.000 copies.

in brazil, reggae drew its biggest following in bahia, a state of northeastern brazil, but rio was quick to develop a loyal following that continue to this day.

the allure of the this genre, that often spoke about a people cut from their cultural roots in africa by slavery, stroke a cord with the largely afro brazilian community of northeastern brazil - after bob marley's death, reggae's popularity decreased and stayed largely as a musical underground scene.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
