it started by educating disfranchised youths in the mostly black favelas of rio, and created initiatives encouraging waste recycling, music classes and sports such as soccer and capoeira, and even job placing services. 

today reggae is mostly found in lapa, in establishments dedicating the night to the genre, or in a part of neighboring city niterói called 'cantareira' (praça leoni ramos), a square rich of small bars and home to many loyal followers of the rhythm.
