in the 1960s the new genre would enjoy the adherence of buarque as well as many other known musicians, taking part in several festivals across rio and other great cities of brazil, helping promote mpb and establishing it as a dominant feature of brazilian music.

caetano veloso, although born in bahia in 1942, re-settled in rio, and intitiated his musical career - commonly referred to by many as the bob dylan of brazil and was an influential figure in Brazilian politics throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s - his most celebrated songs include 'alegria, alegria' (joy, joy) and 'o leăozinho' (little lion).

maria bethânia is amongst some of the most important names in the early development of mpb - the bahian native with a discreet charm and allure, with one of her most vibrant and beloved songs being 'rio de janeiro (isto é o meu brasil)' which eulogizes the splendor of the natural landscape of the city.             arrow-back       arrow-forward
