at a glance

generally, pagode involved candomblé, african-based religious ceremonies and music involving native african rhythms, samba in the early stages - independently of the rhythms or specific african religions involved, the common denominator was always a joyous celebration for the afro-brazilian community.

through most of the 19th century, pagode assumed a character mainly associated with samba, the main genre played at the parties - however, while samba is mostly based on rhythm and percussion, pagode incorporated more singing and involved themes from all aspects of life of those who created and participated in these celebrations.   it was at this point that pagode became a clearly defined music style.

pagode still didn't crossover into brazil's mainstream society as it was still viewed as an event associated solely with afro-brazilians and slavery - this was due in part to pagode gatherings generally held in the suburbs, where celebrations were mostly attended by mostly poor and afro-brazilian dwellers.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
