at a glance

the origin of this denomination is uncertain, but what is certain is that the creation is connected to a carnival block (street party)from the neighborhood of estácio de sá, called 'deixa falar' - this was the first block to 'parade' during carnival celebrations to the sound of a percussion orchestra made up of surdos (big drums), tambourines (acute drums)  and cuícas (friction drums), joined by  drums and rattles.

this musical union was called the 'bateria', which accompanied a type of samba of a very different nature to that of composers donga, sinhô and pixinguinha. samba made estácio de sá fashionable - with the main creators being ismael silva, nílton bastos, bide, and mestre marçal - rapidly establishing the neighborhood as the cornerstone of samba.    arrow-back      arrow-forward
