galeão is located in the west of the island, and is known for harboring the Aeroporto Tom Jobim (Tom Jobim Airport), named after the famous Bossa Nova musician, which was inaugurated in the region in 1952.

The neighborhood's name derives from a large ship built in the region which was the largest vessel in the world in its day, the Galeão do Padre Eterno (Galleon of the Eternal Father).
