It is home to an area known as 'Bananal' (banana plantation), where the Navy military base is now located as well as the Pedra da Onça, (rock of the jaguar) a landmark with a sculpture of the Maracajás felines that once populated the area.

galeão is located in the west of the island, and is known for harboring the Aeroporto Tom Jobim (Tom Jobim Airport), named after the famous Bossa Nova musician, which was inaugurated in the region in 1952.
