beyond the beach são conrado offers a number of recreational activities - the gávea golf club was founded in the 1920s by a group of enthusiasts for the sport. it occupies a stretch of land just beside the sea.

pedra bonita (beautiful rock) is a 696-meter (2283-foot) deforested mountain that hundreds of years ago was covered by brazil's atlantic forest. pedra bonita is not visited as regularly as some of rio's more well-known nature attractions, and offers an incredible bird's-eye view of the city. from its peak there is a beautiful and close-up view of pedra da gávea, rio's square-top seaside monolith.

the mountain is particularly popular with hang gliders and para gliders - an important sport practiced in the neighborhood home to great winds and hills offer optimal conditions.
