In the 1920s urbanization in the region was sparse, and the neighborhood retained a rural character, with houses dotted amongst shrubs and trees. It used to offer some basic infrastructure, such as schools, soccer fields and a club. For the next thirty years, the area was characterized by low-rise houses, preserved areas of greenery, and unpaved roads. In the 1950s the decision was made to build the Aeroporto Internacional Antonio Carlos Jobim, which would cover a significant portion of the island's area. To enable the implementation of such an ambitious program many residents needed to be re-located. Itacolomi was, completely transformed and the area once occupied by farms and homes, is now comprised of the green area between the airport terminal, in the west, and the end of the main runway, to the east. It also contains buildings belonging to the Federal Police and the Vila Juaniça sub-neighborhood. There are a few remains of old Itacolomi in the area, like the school and ruins of old houses. In homage to its past, the road which passes through the area is known as Estrada Itacolomi, or 'Itacolomi Street'. | higienópolis | |||
