at a glance

Itacolomi is somewhat of an oddity amongst the 'carioca' neighborhoods. Although it was once relatively large and lively, it no longer exists as a residential area, however, In spite of its absence, the neighborhood is still fondly remembered by those who once called it home. as history tells, most of the residential parts of the neighborhood were demolished to make way for the construction of the Aeroporto Internacional Antonio Carlos Jobim, or 'António Jobim International Airport'.

The area was once populated by an array of ranches, which belonged to the Benedict Priests. In those days, its rural nature was similar to that of other areas of Ilha do Governador, which would only experience high levels of residential occupation much later. arrow-back     arrow-forward
