mangueira is a favela community located in the north zone of rio de janeiro bordered by benfica, maracanã, vila isabel and são francisco xavier in the são cristóvão administrative region.

the mangueira neighborhood is characterized by simple housing structures, built on the steep foothills of the city. urban development is in progress in order to improve living conditions for residents, of whom many have limited access to basic services such as running water and electricity. the area is susceptible to flooding and erosion caused by landslides during heavy rains.

since the implementation of the police pacification unit (upp) in 2008, violence and crime rates have decreased significantly while social development has benefited from the implimentation of programs and initiatives.
