jardim guanabara is a neighborhood located on governor's island (ilha do governador) in the north zone (zona norte) of rio de janeiro three zones. the bairro (neighborhood) shares the island with fourteen other bairros including bancários, cacuia and cocotá, freguesia da ilha, galeão and jardim carioca; moneró, pitangueiras and portuguesa; praia da bandeira, ribeira, tauá and zumbi.

the island on baía guanabara (guanabara bay) this neighborhood is located on was referred to as the ilha do governador because during the 16th century, the portuguese governor salvador correia de sá who was granted the property by the crown. ownership of the island remained in the de sá family well into the 19th century.
