at a glance

a colonel andré álvares pereira viana, built a chapel on the island in 1662, and he dedicated it to nossa senhora da conceição (our lady of the conception) - it has remained in its place for the past three centuries and may well be one of the oldest buildings on the island.

it was refurbished in 1816 and has been deemed an historic site by the instituto estadual do patrimônio (inepac) or, the state institute of cultural heritage, in portuguese - it is located on the praça jerusalém (jerusalem square) across from the praia da bica (spout beach).

the bairro began as a subdivision development in the mid 1930s, and its winding streets and charming architecture created a pleasant upscale neighborhood - established in 1953, the iate clube jardim guanabara (garden guanabara yacht club) and the parque municipal marcello de ipanema (municipal park marcello de ipanema), developed in 1995, are two of the bairro's major recreational areas, which they add to jardim guanabara's upscale cachet. arrow-back      arrow-forward
