the new homes faced estrada do galeão - galleon road. later, in the mid-thirties, a square was added along with the praça manguetá - manguetá square, and its new bandstand. this was the site for carnival celebrations, where the residents of ilha do governador - governor's island - enjoyed the dances and the festive sounds of samba. the electric trolleys of the 1950s stopped in the mid-sixties with the advent of newer roads. the area's first mall - ilha praça shopping - was built in 1992. also located within the bairro is the governor's island sub-prefecture and headquarters. on rua orcadas (orcadas street). the island is the largest in baía guanabara (guanabara bay). the sub-prefecture of ilha do governdaor maintains an official page on this link, and also publishes pictures, news and events on a parallel facebook page on this link. |
