Presented by the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, the study Madureira e Portela: Uma relação simbólica entre espaço e cultura na representação do território carioca (Madureira and Portela: A symbolic relationship between space and culture in the representation of Rio territory) by Marco Antônio Martins, shows that It is possible to observe that between samba schools that one of their principal characteristics is a strong link to the place in which they are situated and from which they emerged. The place is here understood as a stage of human existence which is endowed with meanings, as is affirmed by Relph (1980) and with life, according to Buttimer (1967).
