at a glance
the area has a rich and well documented history. a ranch which stood in the area found itself at the center of a legal dispute at the beginning of the 19th century, following the death of its owner. from this incident the tenant of the lands, lourenço madureira, emerged victorious, keeping the property until his death and the neighborhood was named in his honor.

tentative settlement of the area began at that time, but was hindered by the lack of access and infrastrcuture, which only improved with the arrival of the rainway towards the end of the 19th century and the installation of trams, initially pulled by animals and later upgrated to be powered by electricity in the 1930s. nowadays madureira has a well developeded  transportation network, which boasts two train lines, two railway stations, several arterial motorways and a  comprehensive bus network. arrow-back      arrow-forward
