at a glance

the neighborhood of maracanã is located in the north zone of rio de janeiro. it is bordered by praça da bandeira, tijuca and vila isabel. most notably, maracanã is the location of one of rio's most famous national landmarks, the maracanã stadium.

surrounding the  maracanã stadium is 1,700 meters of bikeway called the espaço mané garrincha. maracanã is also the site where engineer andre gustavo paulo de frontin first developed a race track that began rio's famous derby club in 1885. however, the main attraction of the district is the stadium itself.

estadio maracanã has the capacity to seat over 82,000 sports fans, and it is the largest sports arena in all of brazil. the stadium houses mainly football events and some concerts and smaller sporting events. some international acts, who have appeared on stage at the maracanã stadium include tina turner, paul mccartney, madonna, guns n'roses, george michael, the rolling stones, sting and the back street boys.
