the estação marechal hermes (marshal hermes station) which serves the estrada de ferro central do brazil (central railroad of brazil) was built in 1913. it is on the register of the patrimônio histórico e artístico (historic and artistic heritage). the design model was based on those of the british railways. president getúlio vargas took up the hermes project in 1930s. many apartment blocks were built on streets, which were named to honor brazil's military.
