at a glance

today the neighborhood of tijuca comprises a wide area of buildings intertwined with large green squares, as well as numerous commercial and historical structures - such wide variety of localities and the sheer size of the official neighborhood resulted in the birth of the so-called sub-neighborhoods.

albeit, for the most part not sanctioned in official terms, they remain an important way of making sense of the geography of large areas in rio de janeiro - muda de tijuca is one of these inofficial neighborhoods, roughly located in the center of the wider administrative region.

its name 'muda da tijuca' can be translated to english as 'change of tijuca' and it is said that this name derives from the fact that in the past travelers stopped in the area to change the horseshoes of their rides - nowadays the sub-neighborhood is square shaped by rua general espírito santo cardoso to the north, rua garibaldi to the west, rua conde de bonfim to the south, and rua uruguai to the east.arrow-back      arrow-forward
