Presented by the Universidade do Grande Rio, the study O Samba no Rio de Janeiro: Elementos socializadores dos grupos étnicos nos quintais de Madureira e Oswaldo Cruz - Samba in Rio de Janeiro: Socializing factors amongst ethnic groups in the backyards of Madureira and Oswaldo Cruz, by Cristina da Conceição Silva, seeks to understand the cultural origins of Samba and the contribution made by African Citizens who came to the city from different African nations, beginning to socialize with African Brazilians born in Rio de Janeiro and later with African Brazilians from Bahia, producing models of entertainment and faith in which food, drumming, social relations and models of housing were the basis for the formation of the carioca Samba culture. The ethnic-racial relations that these groups established over decades in spaces which housed their work, the slums and the carnival furnish us with an understanding of the legacy that Africans have left in the geography of the city. [...] this thesis tries to illuminate the contribution African Brazilians, and their inter-relation with different ethnic groups, made to the formation of the Portela's Samba School and Imperio Serrano, through festive gatherings in the backyards of Madureira and Oswaldo Cruz. | maracanã | |||
