rocha is a neighborhood located in the north zone (zona norte) of rio. the bairro (neighborhood) is bordered by jacaré, complexo do manguinhos and benfica, são francisco xavier, riachuelo and vila isabel.

this bairro's name comes from the estação rocha (rocha railway station). the station was opened in 1885 - it operated until 1960 when it was closed and designated as a guarda-cancela da ferrovia (rail crossing). the bairro rocha was developed and its population increased between 1870 and 1875.

the neighborhood is part of rio's méier administrative region. there are sixteen neighborhoods in the district. in 1965 the avenida central do brasil (central avenue of brazil) was opened. rocha is divided in two by the railway line served by the são francisco xavier (st. francis xavier) and riachuelo railway stations.arrow-back      arrow-forward
