at a glance

todos os santos is a neighborhood located in the north zone (zona norte), one of rio de janeiro four zones. the bairro (neighborhood) borders the communities of méier, cachambi and eng. de dentro.

the bairro's name evolved due to the fact that it was originally an extension of the nearby méier neighborhood. it was here that the estação ferroviária de todos os santos (all saints railway station) was located. the old station of all saints opened in 1868 but was closed in the 1960s - it remains in ruins near the tracks.

in the nineteenth century, a local farm owner, dona conceição gomes donated land for the construction of a church - the chapel of nossa senhora das dores (our lady of sorrows) was constructed on the property - gabriel getúlio de mendonça, another local property owner, constructed several streets including the rua todos os santos (all saints streets), which today is the rua josé bonifácio. he also opened rua leopoldina (now, castro alves), rua almeida (now, father ildefonso penalva) and rua Getúlio (Getúlio street) to name a few. arrow-back      arrow-forward
