at a glance

two decades later, in 1847, native artist manuel de araújo porto-alegre continued the development of the palace by softening the overall style of the facades, making them work in harmony with one another. the gardens also experienced severe remodeling including the installation of artificial lakes, bridges, caves, and even bogus ancient temples, each of these features in line with the romantic trend of the time.

following the proclamation of the republic in 1889, the imperial family deserted brazil, leaving the palace and its grounds empty. brazilian politcians took hold of the property and the first republican constitution of the country was written in the paço de são cristóvão.

finally, the director of the national museum of rio de janeiro transferred the institution from the campo de santana to the paço de são cristóvão. in the process the interior decoration was lost, however, a proportion was salvaged and can be viewed in other museums to this day. arrow-back      arrow-forward
