Presented by the    Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, the study Rio de Janeiro: memória e espaço portuário -Rio de Janeiro: memory and harbor space, by Icléia Thiesen and Luitgarde Oliveira Cavalcanti Barros, focusses on Rio de Janeiro's harbor area, located in the neighborhoods of Saúde, Gamboa and Santo Cristo, in the centre of the city.  The methodology of the research that birthed this work is interdisciplinary and inter-institutional, aiming to illuminate urban spaces, the memories they contain and the feelings invested in them by their inhabitants.

This work also analyses existing literature on the subject, produced by the main storytellers of urban history, in order to demonstrate the changes that have taken place to the harbor area over the centuries at both sights. These storytellers are historians and common people, the poorest inhabitants of the city, who have suffered the effects of urban changes which have not always taken into account their interests.
