vila kosmos is a neighborhood located in the zona norte (north zone) of rio de janeiro, within the administrative region of greater  iraja. surrounding bairros (neighborhoods) include vicente de carvalho, vila da penha, penha circular and tomás coelho,

in the early 1900s, the development of the railroad of brazil brought the develoment of an urban center to vila kosmos,  as a result property valueas increased  in close proximity to the urban center. the name vila kosmos originates from the cosmos real estate company, which began selling property in the area in the early eighteenth century.

the construction of automobile avenue led to increased land investment and industrialization within vila kosmos. automobile avenue is today known as dr. martin luther king jr. avenue, a 25 km long road that connects the neighborhoods of northern rio, providing commuters with easy access to work and leisure activities in the region.
