at a glance

usina is an unofficial neighborhood of rio de janeiro, located in the zona norte (north zone) of the city, close to alto da boa vista, near tijuca - it is considered a residential neighborhood, with many tree-lined streets and beautiful homes, as well as a number of commercial establishments and new businesses.

the bairro (neighborhood) carries a significant amount of history, dating back to the 1800s - in 1898, the estrada de ferro da tijuca was created, the second railway line to be fueled by electricity in the city (the first travelled from largo da carioca to largo do machado), the electricity that moved these trains was generated from a thermoelectric plant in tijuca, which is where the name usina (plant) originated.

this neighborhood has been addresing a variety of social problems that are prevelant in a number of favela communities located in close proximity, including the morro da formiga, morro da casa branca, and morro do borel - the recent strategic presence of the unidade da polícia pacificadora (upp), or the pacification police, has significantly reduced the instances of crime and violence in the region.
