vigário geral is a bairro (neighborhood) located in the zona norte (north zone of rio de janeiro) - it is surrounded by the neighborhoods of jardim américa in the west, in the north it is limited by the shores of the rio pavuna (pavuna river), while the south border runs along the important traffic artery avenida brasil, which connects the bairro to the west and centrel zones of rio de janeiro.

the territory used to belong to the vast fazenda botafogo (botafogo ranch) and settlement was scarce until the arrival of the railway - later the region was subject to investment, sparking urbanization and development in the 1960s.

the neighborhood houses a large favela community, which is well known due to its representation in the documentary favela rising - which deals with the thematic of the infamous vigário geral massacre and tells the inspirational story of a social movement motivated to change their reality through music.
