Presented by the  Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, the study Análise de indicadores de enchentes recorrentes nos bairros de Vargem Grande e Vargem Peque, com auxílio do Geoprocessamento - Analysis of the indicators of recurrent floods in the neighborhoods of Vargem Grande and Vargem Peque, with the aid of Geoprocessing, by Bruno Vieira Lourenço, aims to analyze this part of the city of Rio de Janeiro firstly with regards to its geo-environmental characteristics to consider them, in the second instance, in relation to the hydrologic situation in Rio summers, between the months of January and March. This period of the year is marked by higher indices of rainfall, characteristic of a tropical, humid summer, which make a city vulnerable to all types of chains of events which arise in the wake of this climatic condition, such as: movements of land mass, on the slopes of the coast and interior, and flooding in lower lands. These events transform the landscape and directly impact the living conditions of residents, whose lives are put at risk during the event per se, as a result of landslides and burial, and after the event, because of the proliferation of problems with hydraulic systems.
