Presented by the I nstituto Polis, the study Moradia é central - Inclusão, Acesso e Direito à Cidade, home is central - Inclusion, Access and Rights in a City, by Margareth Matiko Uemura, Isadora Tami Lemos Tsukumo, Natasha Mincoff Menegon e Sidney Piochi, examines howIn the last few decades the big and medium sized cities of Brazil and their metropolitan regions underwent very similar socio-spatial dynamics. The increase in population in these cities created a very unequal dynamic between the neighborhoods and municipalities in the metropolitan region. On one side population size reduced in central neighborhoods, equipped with infrastructure, and, on the other side, there was a significant increase in rates of population in peripheral, precarious and environmentally fragile neighborhoods and municipalities. While the central areas reduced their population, neighborhoods removed from the centre and peripheral municipalities experienced growth rates of over 10% a year. |
