the fort, however, was popularly called the forte do espia (fort of the spy), and during this period it protected the city of rio de janeiro from invasion on several occasions. approximately one hundred years later it was officially named the forte do leme, after 'leme' the neighborhood where it is located, but in 1935, president getúlio vargas renamed it the forte duque de caxias, its official present name. the fort has witnessed or participated in many historic events from the revolt of the eighteen in 1922 to its role in world war two. |
