the sheer size and spread of the residential areas across its bulk make campo grande one of those neighborhoods which were further fragmented into several unofficial neighborhoods in order to facilitate administrative issues and geographic organization of transports. rio de prata is surely one of such smaller residential areas born from such needs. its name comes after a local river and would be translatable as 'silver river'. this stream of water was once used to delimit the area which was known as 'campo grande' in colonial times and which went up to the mendanha region. the whole region always had a very important role regarding farming, and was a great producer of several items, which changed with the passing of time - rio da prata itself was one of the largest coffee farms during the 18th century. the electric trams arrived in the early 20th century and were a very important mean of transportation until the 1960s, when they ceased to be used in the region. |
