at a glance

the place has a long and interesting history that went so far as to provide inspiration for an early nineties tv globo telenovela called fera ferida - tubiacanga held an important position in the beginning of the 20th century, as a grand provider of fruits and legumes for old municipal market that would take place in praça xv, beyond this, the neighborhood also provided plenty of sand for construction works throughout rio de janeiro.

the neighborhood still faces some challenges, however - as the area is still undergoing infrastructural improvements in many areas such as sanitation, roads maintenance, and street lighting - city authorities and local residents have had a controversial relationship for many years, with a long-standing dispute over who holds the ultimate responsibility for maintenance of the neighborhood's infrastructure. arrow-back     arrow-forward
