at a glance

this neighborhood has been addressing a variety of social problems prevalent in a number of favela communities that are located in close proximity, including the morro da formiga, morro da casa branca, and morro do borel. the recent strategic presence of the unidade da polícia pacificadora (upp), or the pacification police, has significantly reduced the instances of crime and violence in the region.

the region is also known for its local hospital, são francisco de assis, inaugurated by pope francisco in his 2013 visit to brazil. the hospital now has a special rehabilitation section reserved for those addicted to substances.
