introduction

feijoada is a black bean stew, with assorted meats and vegetables cooked over a low fire, giving it a particularly strong flavor - it can be found throughout rio de janeiro, and is one of the most evident influences of african cuisine in brazilian cooking.

another favorite african dish is jollof rice, which hails from nigeria, but has spread throughout the continent, and incorporates rice mixed with various vegetables and spices, to give a simple, but delicious treat.

african cuisine has existed in brazil for almost 500 years, since the first africans arrived in the country in 1538 - millions of africans were taken to brazil during the years of slavery, and had a profound influence on the establishment of brazilian culture, and notably the cuisine of the country.

they continued to migrate to brazil in the years succeeding slavery, with various waves of migration, especially from angola, which shares a special relationship with the country.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
