at a glance

as a city established by a portuguese soldier, in 1565, rio de janeiro has portuguese culture at its core, with a huge level of influence originally coming from its european founder - playing a huge role in the shaping of modern day brazil, and rio de janeiro, traditional portuguese culture, along with african, and various indigenous cultures, is one of the corner stones of brazilian, and carioca culture.

part of the process of brazilian culture building, involved the migration of traditional cooking techniques and cuisine to the new tropical shores of the then portuguese empire - they can be found as a staple cuisine all over the city.

of course, brazilian dishes have taken the traditional portuguese style and blended it with other global cuisines, as well as the local products available to them, giving it its own individual touch - however, traditional portuguese cooking can still be found, as one of the most popular types of food in rio.

traditional portuguese cooking is still one of the most popular types of food in rio, whose main dishes focus on fish and meat, accompanied by rice, potatoes and salad - heavy stews and casseroles are also common.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
