on a more traditional fast food tone, bob's is extremely successful with cariocas and serves burgers and french fries - launched in 1952 by the former wimbledon american tennis champion robert falkenburg, bob's became an instant success and introduced to brazil new items such as milkshakes, hot dogs, and sundaes - they can be found everywhere in rio and in each shopping mall's food court.

restaurants from international fast food chains such as mc donald's, subway and burger king are becoming widespread and are quite popular these days in rio - on average, international fast food restaurants can be more expensive when compared to food sold by kilos or sandwich shops.

thanks to glocalization, many items that are more related to the local cuisine and are not neccessarily part of the traditional menu of these franchises, are available to accompany one's meal.

mc donald's is always growing in popularity, and considered a treat by the locals.  with over 70 stores in rio de janeiro it is second only to bob's, estimated to have over 130.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
