ice cream, beloved by children and adults all over the world, was first conceived by the chinese who ingeniously mixed snow with fruit to create the delicacy - another seminal moment in its history was when marco polo transported the dessert from the east to the west in 1292, at which point it quickly spread across italy.

the brazilian ice-cream odyssey began a little later, in 1834, when two traders sailed on to rio's shores from north america, with the delicacy on board - because the technology had not been developed to conserve the delicious cold sweet, it was not until 1941 that businessman john kent lutey established u. s. harkson do brasil, which changed its name in the 60s to kibon, at a former warehouse called black cat and started producing ice cream on an industrial level.

many historians and cultural commentators claim that ice cream played a seminal role in the development of women's rights in rio and the rest of the country - before the arrival of ice cream manufacturers, it was prohibited for women to enter bars and shops, but the deliciously refreshing dessert provoked women to deman an entrance in order to try and taste for themselves.   arrow-back      arrow-forward
