brazil's sucos, which means juices in portuguese, is some of the sweetest and most succulent throughout the world - there is nothing more thirst-quenching and deliciously refreshing than a large class of fruit juice on a hot day - no wonder it is considered a sacred staple in the carioca diet, and something which companies and residents have gone to great lengths to perfect.

there are a variety of fruit juices on offer at many establishments in rio, from the traditional orange and apple, to the more tropical options of guava, papaya, mango, umbu, bacaba, cambuci, bacuripari, taperebá, and jackfruit.

there is not a preferred flavor, and demand varies according to the season: when the temperature rises, there is a higher demand for cool mixes such as mango and mint, carrots and beets with orange juice, citrus fruits mixed with chlorophyll, peppermint, lemongrass or coconut water.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
