unfortunately, whilst an enchanting city, rio is also blighted with crime, which is something that hikers and trekkers need to be aware of before setting off on a journey, as there have been reports of mugging and violent crime along the trails. 

there has been a significant drop in the number of crimes on the trails since the 1990's - however, it is still best to be cautious, with weekends the best time to go, as there are more people on the trails, or by joining one of the many hiking groups, in the city.

whilst sticking to the guidelines, set out above, a hike or a trek through some of the vast wildernesses of the city, can be a truly breathtaking and rewarding experience, and something not to be missed on a trip to rio.
