judo is one of the few martial arts that was created as a competitive activity versus a primary defense art or way of life. invented in japan in 1882, by dr. jigoro kano, the word judo breaks down into two meanings of 'gentle' and 'way or path'  - mental training along with physical strength are major characteristics of judo.

primarily a series of throws and takedowns are the moves participants utilize to gain points - although created for sport, its real world applications are also incredibly useful.

judo immediately gained a large following and popularity in the material arts community - professor kano was assigned to the international olympic committee in 1909 and pushed for the spread of judo.
