statewide, there are a few caves to visit with two of the most famous being gruta pedra santa and gruta novo tempo, both part of the parque estadual das cavernas fluminenses which was established as a state park in 1998.

located in the counties of cantagalo and itaocara, in the east central state of rio de janeiro about 120 miles northeast of the city of rio, this area was the center of the cement manufacturing for brazil.

these caves were once part of the large cement manufactures quarrying work, and subsequently abandoned when no longer viable.
