beautiful and peaceful looking, brocoió is the island where slaves brought in from africa were kept in quarantine. the sound of carriages behind the beach, and the view of small fishermen boats near the shore create a magic ambiance not normally associated with the beaches or the city of rio de janeiro. formerly called praia de itanhangá, this beach was renamed praia da moreninha as a tribute to a famous book 'a moreninha' written by joaquim manuel de macedo and published in 1844.
