the book tells the story of a romance between a girl and boy who lived on the island, and uses their love story to popularize the indigenous legend behind the origin of a fresh water spring formerly located on this beach, at the rock edging the beach and now called pedra da moreninha.

in the story, an indigenous girl named poranga was in love with itanhantã, who hunted during the day and rested in the cave below the rock at night, never noticing poranga.

poranga kept singing and crying for itanhantã, and her tears dug a hole through the rock and into the cave.
