one day, through the hole, poranga's tears fell onto itanhantã, who finally noticed poranga and fell in love with her. the water spring in the cave, called grota funda, was then born from poranga's tears, and they lived together ever after. the water spring in grota funda (deep cave) no longer exists, but the cave remains one of the most beloved local landmarks on the island. locals also tell another version of the legend, the story of a girl from the island falling in love with a french soldier during the time of war between the french and the portuguese.
