in the guanabara bay, praia de galeão received its name from a large ship built on ilha de governador in the seventeenth century. a shipyard was established on the guanabara bay, where the waters were much calmer than those of the south zone beaches. portuguese shipbuilders were the best in the world - the ship was called the 'galeão padre eterno', or the galleon of the eternal father, and was the largest ship ever built at the time.
