the area became known as 'ponto de galeão' or galleon point, and later the neighborhood, the beach, and the airport in the same area would be given the same name. the beach stretches along the southwest coast of the island along the route of estrada do galeão, southeast of the air base galeão.

at its golden days, which lasted up until the 1970's, praia de galeão was a clean stretch of beach with clear waters, and attracted families from several parts of the city.
